Homeward will be serving BCBS Minnesota’s Medicare Advantage members in 24 counties. The company provides primary and specialty care in the home, virtually and in the community through mobile clinics. It leverages cellular-based remote monitoring to track patients’ health in-between visits. The company also partners with existing providers in the area for this care.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota formed a value-based arrangement with Minnesota Oncology in 2019. Preliminary data show that it led to a reduction in the total cost of care, emergency visits and inpatient admissions.
Shkreli controversially raised the price of the drug Daraprim, which is used to treat a potentially fatal parasitic infection, by 4,000%, from $13.50 to $750 per pill in 2015. In January, a federal judge banned him from the pharmaceutical industry for life.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota has filed a class-action lawsuit — on behalf of itself and insurers from 30-plus states — against Martin Shkreli and Vyera Pharmaceuticals. The suit alleges the defendants intentionally monopolized the market for Daraprim to raise the price of the drug by more than 4,000%.
The two companies had been negotiating a six-year value-based contract prior to the start of the pandemic. Allina and BCBS of Minnesota expect the agreement will affect roughly 130,000 patients.
